What I would do is verify the motherboard works by running outside of the computer case, with nothing but PSU(Power Supply Unit), RAM(Won't boot without it) and CPU(with cooler) installed(No graphics card, no harddrive, etc..). Don't plug in anything but the power cord to the PSU; No screen, keyboar...
