Ok - I think I'm going to need some help here.
I played my first match against the AI and I spent the first few minutes just walking around with my Engineers
Needless to say I lost that first match.

seems to me like the heavy tanks are dominating the battle and there is little you can do about it.

Had a 3v3 match last night where I was actually holding off the russians and managed to keep it going. After a while one of my teammates lagged out and it was a 2v3 and we started to get pushed back. At that point I probably had atleast 2 Tigers out on the field, with atleast another 2 on the way. Did not work out at the end as we lost 27-0.

you can only counter it with your own heavy tanks.

i win the tank fights, but i don't get the infantry ones.
i loose all the infantry fights from both sides.
mortars are OP, killing 4-5 man squads in a single hit, and the retreat bonus doesn't help either.

I'm terrible at this game as well. The only strategy, if you can call it that, that I've been able to successfully use is guards Infantry in Scout cars as Russia. Probably the only thing I've found more OP in the early game than the mortars the AI seems to spam with absurdly deadly accuracy.

The way to stop German heavy tanks is su85 spam. Then send some conscripts to spot as you rain the pain from afar. Or use 6 120mm mortars with mortar barrage. Mr tiger did have an engine. Not any more.
Guard infantry are brutal if they flank any armour.
That or if you built any penal legion early on. Their satchel charge is just hilarious.
Or use the IL-2 4x50kg bomb ability.
