Conquest Assualt is like old school BF2. Think of the many BF2 Karkand rounds you played...
One team is defender and has all the flags.
The other team is attacker with only a main spawn to start and slightly more tickets.
Attacker starts with bleed and needs to take flags to stop the bleed and push the defender of the map if possible. From what I can see defender does not need a flag to spawn on a living squad member.

Thanks for info Ash although on 16 sized Karkand map the middle flag was neutral
