GC is the most diverse place I've been a member of in a long time. We've got people from India to Eastern Europe all the way down to South America and Western Europe. Now due to this diversity, there must be a ton of movies that I haven't seen from each of these individual countries.
I love watching movies and I especially love watching foreign movies b/c they usually cover different themes and have very different tones to them. So I ask this question:
What is the most iconic/best/memorable/favorite movie that your country has made? I still have a few more weeks until I go back to school for my final year and so I would love to spend those last few weeks watching some of these recommended movies.
Well, I'll start off. Being Korean, I'd have to say my favorite movie from Korea is OldBoy. If you like psychological mind benders/thrillers, I highly recommend this to you.

I'm a big movie fan as well and in my oppinion "Das Leben der Anderen" aka "The Lives of Others" is probably one of the best German movies. Another great German movie is "Soul Kitchen".
I love OldBoy as well (along with Symapthy for Mr. / Lady Vengeance).

Best movie is kinda' subjective, I dunno if it's the best but my personal favorite Croatian movie is "Kako je počeo rat na mom otoku". I doubt you'll find subtitles for it though.

The most famous Brazilian movie is certainly City of God. But my favorite one is
Central do Brasil, such a nice movie.

Best Argentinian movie
9 Reinas/9 Queens
I don't really like the local movies but this one it's probably one of the best movies i've ever seen, and I did watch it like 5 times at least.

Maybe, but I'm not a big fan, don't like the glorified view they give to the police, people here go mad.

I loved it! It's a pity that the director died. I really liked Ricardo Darín in it, which brings me to my favorite Argentinian movie, El secreto de sus ojos.

Well most people have seen many American films and this post wasn't directed at us yanks, but frankly my Haruky, I don't give a damn. My favorite not-so-popular US film is probably
Primer. If you like science fiction and/or time travel, you will love the film. It's an independent film so the production values and acting aren't that great, but the directing and script writing are superb.
How about films from our ancestral homelands?
Best German film I've ever seen (admittedly few in number) is
Das Boot. It's a WWII film but if you like submarine warfare or the drama associated with subs, it doesn't get any better.
I don't think I've ever seen an Irish film...
One of my favorite foreign films is probably La Vita Belle. It's another WWII period film but it's Itallian. I would suggest not reading a synopsis as it might spoil it for you; I watched it with no information other than "it's a great film" and was entertained, surprised, shocked but very satisfied after watching it. I highly recommend it.
This post makes me sound like a WWII nut. I suppose that's partly true, but these were the first films that sprung to mind.
edit: film

Sorry, Albino, but you may have forgotten the best and most memorable movie (series) from Germany:
Das Boot
Watch it.
If you are able to, try to get the series. The movie is just a sliced down version of the rest.

Wiki says:
"A version of three 100 minute episodes was transmitted on BBC Two in the United Kingdom in October 1984, and in Germany and Austria the following year."
