The main difference between having the key or not, is the ability to call Microsoft when you've done some hardware changes and the signature isn't the same, and have Windows reactivated.
Doesn't change the fact you need to have a Win 10 key, and in order to have that you need to upgrade, right?

One can find ones windows key in the system control settings.
If you want to make a clean install from a bootable device, write it down somewhere.
You can use this key for the win 10 installation as long as your old windows is upgradeable.
The activation will happen when you go online.

How would you write down your Windows 10 key if you haven't yet upgraded to Windows 10? You can't use your Win 7/8 key for that.
What I'm saying, or at least that's what I read, is that in order to do a clean install from a boot drive you need to first upgrade to Win 10, get the license key, then do the clean install.

That's how I understand it. Windows 7/8 keys shouldn't activate Windows 10. When you do the upgrade, the installer automatically assigns you a Windows 10 key, which you can then retrieve once the upgrade is complete.

Yes, which is why you first need to complete the upgrade to Win 10. After that you can do as many clean installs as you like. I read a post you can even change your MB during the initial free year and still be able to activate. After that period I have no idea.

my key stayed the same after the upgrade.

When I ran the media creation tool to download the win 10 iso to burn it on a dvd, I was notified to write down my current windows key. I would assume that means the win7/8 key can be used for a clean win 10 install. Might be wrong, though.

Do you run both BF4 and TS with administrator rights, that can cause problems if you don't.
Otherwise, download the Win10 ISO-files from Microsoft and do a clean install.
I have never and will never do an upgrade! :)

Btw, have you turned off the filesharing things in Win10, check following link?
By downloading Windows 10 you are allowing Microsoft to spy on you
Windows 10 is Genesys.
Genesys is Skynet.
So, Windows 10 is Skynet.

All hail Terminator..

Wait. You kind of lost me. So you're saying that from Win 8 you used Media Creation Tool to generate an ISO; this provided a product key, which you later used for a clean install from the DVD?
Maybe it registers the license for your computer when you download the media. I don't know.

It just lets you create the installation medium (ISO or usb stick) for windows 10.
If your win 7/8 key will work, I dont know, but I would assume it does because that is the sensible thing do to.
If your win key gets moved to win 10 before or after the installation should not matter, but I don't know.
I just upgraded and all is fine 8)

I know what it does. I'm asking what you did.
Did you upgrade the way I described (Win 8 --> ISO --> Clean install --> Win 10), or the way the Internet says (Win 8 --> Win 10 upgrade --> ISO --> Clean install --> New Win 10)?
It matters because it save time if you don't need to upgrade first to Win 10 then do a clean install of Win 10 again.

It's also kind of reassuring that everything went smoothly because my experience is usually bad. I'd probably wait either way. A combination of laziness and lack of faith in M$

I downloaded the ISO and used it for the upgrade from win 8.1, no clean install. I am too lazy to install all programs and do all settings and stuff.

Alrighty then

Lazy?! That's crazy talk. I'd probably do the same when I decide to upgrade.

What is it with you people 0_o

90% of you that have reformatted to 10 have refused to do a clean install ... coincidentally those 90% are getting weird errors ^^

It takes one evening and will probably save you a lot of headaches down the line

We're lazy and don't you dare judge!

Plus there's obviously what Roka said. A clean install is a major undertaking, and doesn't guarantee a headache free journey.
