Bottom line you don't need a rule to ban/sanction a person, neither do you want to maintain a rule book the size of the US constitution for this community.
... which is why we don't have or need a rule book the size of the US constitution. We have a GC Netiquette page on the wiki which is pretty clear and quite concise. Note the mission statement:
The following rules have been set to ensure GC can fulfill its purpose of being the BF-Community everybody feels welcome.
That's served us well until recently. Things got slightly out of hand, which necessitated what looks to me to be the lightest possible way of dealing with the situation: a global reminder to "be polite".

But

Nix has the right of it, basically. There's nothing more to say, except that if someone really doesn't get it, then this probably isn't the right community for them. I'm pretty sure everyone actually understands how to behave, however, so I don't anticipate this incredibly minor rule change and gentle reminder to cause upheaval. Or I didn't, anyway.

Can I just say how glad I am to not be the person sparking controversy?

Except you didn't post a reminder, you introduced new rules. And apparently these are missing "no racism, no trolling, no harassing, etc..." you'll end up with a rule book the size of the US constitution.
Or is racism tolerated here?!

Nobody argues giving links to naked gals in debrief is inappropriate. no one. everyone agrees it is inappropriate.
The argument is whether we actually need rules to remind us that.
The fact this thread is so hot just shows how controversial introducing these new rules, meaning a lot of people think these rules are not needed.

13 years and we didn't have a problem.

Now, because one guy, you introduce these rules which totally unnecessary for the rest of us.
Should've just explained it to that guy and thats it.
I don't think this problem is so widespread in this community it actually requires a rule to deal with. Seems like a friendly reminder is all that was needed.

Somehow violence and swearing became acceptable in-game and TS in this thread, but can't write f*ck or sh*t on forums.
silly.

Except the guy cited specifically that the TS was not included in the rules to justify his posting of the image. We tried explaining but it didn't get through very well. Hence this post.

No, the problem is not widespread. But we need those rules if we ever want to take action in the future. As you know this a big community where we try to have a system in place to run it. I think everyone here would prefer having some rules where mod actions are based upon instead of someone up higher just banning or suspending people according to his will.

Guys, I truly believe the majority of people here won't ever have a problem with this. Have a little common sense and respect each other. That's it. This thread was to let you know that we've updated the rules, I think everyone got that, let's move on.

Wow. This thread got kinda nuts.

I feel like people are over analyzing/taking things a bit too far. The "rules" posted are basically just common sense guidelines to follow. Simple "etiquette" rules. I don't think these were introduced to start arresting/banning folks. Rather, it's a simple set of etiquettes that us GCer's should keep in mind when in GC hosted comms.

I know a lot of people here have made pretty close friends. I don't think the rules are trying to prevent close-knit groups from sharing whatever they want with each other. But if someone new pops in, I think the general idea is to avoid posting potentially inflammatory material so that the newcomer doesn't feel uncomfortable. Who knows, they might join right in. But I think it'd be a lot beneficial for everyone involved if we took the safe road. It's like first dates. You don't talk about certain things until you've gotten to know that person better..

This is how I interpreted these new rules. I might be completely off the target here, but I honestly don't think these were introduced to create such polarizing/angry feelings within the community.

In that case you are right.

I showed the hotdog picture to my boss today, he had a huge laugh and said that if I would have shown that on my interview I would have been hired on the spot!
I guess us sailors have a different way of seeing things, we do love the Red Light District in Amsterdam!

Just use NSFW in front of your "dangerous" links and everything will be fine, at least that's what I got told.
