After reading this blog posted up by Styphon I get the feeling we will be revisiting the ranked vs. unranked question again. BF3 seems to be taking the player upgrades to a new and more tactical level. I'm not sure that after spending hours upon hours ranking up the vast array of specialized unlocks that players are going to want to give them up to play on unranked servers. In earlier BF titles the unlocks were cool but not that tactical, it wasn't the end of the world to give them up. In BF3 I think its going to be different. So I suggest we keep an open mind on this one.

Allowing passworded ranked servers leads to all types of misuse and abuse of the ranking system so I doubt that will be allowed, and perhaps, if you think it through, it never should. Lets just hope we have more control through whatever control panel they give us than we have had in the past that will allow us to customize a compromise.

On the subject of giving up unlocks: I believe I read someone post that unranked servers can allow all[
/i] unlocks, regardless of if you've "earned" them or not. This would be most fair for all our players, and would help motivate newer players to come play with us.

That's just what I've heard, though... not even a source available right now.

@googles: Page 2 in this topic maybe ? :)

the "important" part

Code: Select all

In Unranked mode, player progression is not tracked on the master servers. Server administrators have free reign on such servers - no Battlefield Rules of Engagement to heed. They can control in detail which weapons are available to the players, etc. This mode is suited to playing clan matches, tournaments, or to those players who just like the fairness of everyone having the same range of weapons available to them."

Thanks for clearing that up Mr Grib.

We will most likely not be able to a run ranked battleday. We could leave it unlocked..... IF we can fill it. Would need some good game server control to pull that off. Locked and unranked is much easier.

BTW anyone interested in helping out please keep check the latest forum posts. GC runs on volunteers. Feel free to message me anytime.

There's always the possibility of a mod that allows people to use their personal unlocks on an unranked server. Supposedly unranked servers will allow you to control what weapons are available, so maybe we can work up a GC unlock list for battle days.

It'll be a while before we can start working on firm decisions one way or the other, though, I'm sure.

My vote goes for either "all", "nothing" and "what i unlocked"

Everything else is mostly personal taste. (which might not suite everybody)

I think you just covered every single consideration in a single sentence, which is quite impressive!!! :)

But like has been said on more than one occasion; lets keep an open mind and be ready for quick decisions when the Beta comes out.

Not necessarily, because we had everything unlocked for BF2. If we have everything unlocked on the BF3 unranked server then they're giving up nothing. In fact they're getting a sneak preview as to what they're going to get in the future.

I really don't see the point in this unranked vs ranked. The server has to be passworded for it to play like GC, otherwise you will have random people coming in and disrupting it. If we had a ranked server and started kicking people for not being on our TS then it would quickly be reported for breach of ROE and we'd be shut down. The discussion has to be what settings on an unranked server. There's simply no way this would ever work on a ranked server.

I think it would be cool to have a fixed arsenal for the army and you could distribute it to your soldiers before the battle. Would be a though mod to do but would change some tactics :)
So.. since it would be difficult to code&maintain I don't see it in the near future.

Interesting ... but tough. If done to the extreme that would mean, you have say only 5 Antitankkits. Which would make defence against arriving tanks at an unexpected flag nearly impossible, since you could not respawn with the according weaponery.

mmm special squads? Only squad 1 can take tanks, only squad 2 can play engi, only squad 3 can be medics etc. Would make the roles of Commander and squad leaders very interesting. Or only 1 medic per squad, 1 engi per squad etc. But that specialist would get to play fully loaded - lots of things to play with here.
